• Summary

  Inclusive recruiting practices, knowledge of underrepresented minoritized students, and DEI are the focus of this session. Join presenters from Villanova University who will share how the organization converted two on-campus networking events engaging students from underrepresented and minoritized communities to Zoom and the Handshake career fairs platform. Lessons learned will be shared, as well as why each platform was chosen to deliver the events virtually, resulting in higher student attendance, better collaboration across campus, and more thoughtful connections with employers. Attendees will be able to use the data and research presented to implement best practices and gain immediate takeaways that support and promote key understanding of the content.

  Following this program, you will be able to:

  • Understand ways to authentically connect students to employers that both value diversity and have recruitment programs designed to embrace DEI;
  • Learn to partner with student life and DEI offices/initiatives to reach students and funnel information and support materials through them; and
  • Engage a corporate sponsor and create a return on investment in a virtual platform.

  Susanne Donovan , Assistant Director, Career Development, Villanova University

  Susanne Donovan is an Assistant Director of Career Development at Villanova University’s Career Center serving as a liaison to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Pre-Health Office, the Office of Disability and Learning Support Services. She offers workshops for science majors and focuses on the career initiatives of the student group “LEVEL”. Susanne has taught courses including Professional Success for the Villanova Summer Business Institute and Professional Writing. She earned a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Immaculata University. Prior to her higher education career, she worked for 15 years as an Assistant Vice President in the reinsurance field.

  

  Jhaakira Jacobs , Associate Director, Career Development, [ARCHIVES]

  Jhaakira Jacobs is the assistant director of career development at Villanova University’s career center. She serves as a liaison to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and supports diversity and inclusion programming initiatives for first-generation and underrepresented students. Jacobs is also an active member of NASPA and is engaged with its Student Career Development Knowledge Community. She has a background in career counseling, grant project management, and nontraditional student populations.  She is currently pursuing an HR Certificate with an emphasis on inclusion and diversity strategy from Villanova and earned her master’s degree in higher education and student affairs administration from Old Dominion University.

  

  Christie Vuoto , Director, Industry Advising, Villanova University

  Christie Vuoto serves as associate director, industry advising, in the Villanova University career center. She consults with employers on their recruiting strategy in the industries of financial services, accounting, communication, media, marketing, nonprofit, and government. In addition to working with employers, she provides advising appointments to students interested in these industries. Vuoto also manages events in the career center that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has been working in career services for seven years and has her master’s degree in counseling for mental health and wellness from New York University and bachelor’s degree in psychology from Loyola University Maryland.
