Spotlight for Career Services Professionals
Which industries are you likely to see represented by employers recruiting on campus this spring? According to results of NACE’s Job Outlook 2019 survey, you are most likely to see employers that provide miscellaneous professional services and chemical (pharmaceutical) manufacturers.
All of the employers in miscellaneous professional services—which includes accounting firms, engineering firms, management consulting firms, computer consulting firms, advertising firms, and more—reported having either firm (83.3 percent) or tentative (16.7 percent) plans to recruit on campus this spring.
Among chemical (pharmaceutical) manufacturers, there is an even split between those with firm (40 percent) and tentative (40 percent) recruiting plans for spring 2019. The other 20 percent of respondents are not hiring. (See Figure 1.)
More than three-fourths of miscellaneous manufacturers have either firm (22.2 percent) or tentative (55.6 percent) plans to recruit on campus this spring. Similarly, 37.5 percent of employers in the finance, insurance, and real estate industry have firm plans to recruit on campus; another 31.3 percent of these employers have tentative plans.
While almost 38 percent of computer and electronics manufacturers conducted all their recruiting this fall, nearly half of respondents in this industry have firm (37.5 percent) or tentative (12.5 percent) plans for spring 2019 recruiting.
Data for the Job Outlook 2019 survey were collected from August 1, 2018, through October 8, 2018. A total of 172 surveys were returned—an 18.5 percent response rate. The Job Outlook 2019 report is available free to members through MyNACE. Nonmembers can purchase the report through the NACE Store.
