• Summary

  This session will demonstrate the use of predictive analytics with Civitas Illume—a retention-centered tool—to identify students who might be in a good place for a proactive career intervention. In using predictive analytics, career teams can become an increasingly integral and strategic part of a university’s student persistence initiative. This is an especially relevant program for career professionals on campuses that presently use or are considering investing in predictive analytics tools.

  Following this program, you will be able to:

  • Recognize and advocate for the power of predictive analytics in student persistence;
  • Identify ways that the career center can be involved in student persistence through predictive analytics; and
  • Understand the basic use of a predictive analytics tool within the career development realm.

  John Rindy , Asst VP Office of Career Ed & Dev, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania

  John Rindy has served in different administrative roles in higher education over the past 18 years, after spending the first half of his career in the corporate world in project management and executive leadership. Rindy is a member of the enrollment management team at SRU, and his work presently spans an array of functional areas from career education and success coaching to tutorial services, first-year seminar, learning community clusters, distinguished scholarships and fellowships, and SRU’s exploratory program. A staple mantra in the Enrollment Management Division at SRU is, “If it moves, we measure it!” During his 12 years at “The Rock,” Rindy and his work family’s use of data has expanded considerably. In 2020, his ongoing application of assessments and analytics led to his move from director for career education and development to assistant vice president in the Center for Career and Academic Progress (CCAP). Contributing to SRU’s strong persistence and graduation rates, the CCAP family leads an interconnected career and academic progress model that is informed by data and predictive analytics and centered upon five key pillars to student persistence: goals, relationships, values, bias-to-act, and mindset.
