    Career center mission statement

    The career center plays a vital role in the university's mission. Our purpose is to help students establish fulfilling careers, contribute to society, and adapt to the increasing complexity of life and work in the 21st century. We express our mission as we carry out the following:

    1. Provide comprehensive services and information resources that enable students to take active responsibility for their career decisions and job search.
    2. Equip students for making career plans by facilitating awareness of their work-related strengths, interests, and values, and understanding of the world of work.
    3. Prepare students for finding suitable employment by enhancing their job search skills and capacity to express the relevance of their strengths to employers.
    4. Foster relationships with the employer community that provide students with opportunities to develop professional skills, integrate academic learning with work, and find jobs.

    Major responsibility areas

    Management and development of satellite office (75 percent)

    • Independently operate satellite office as only off-site career center; including financial and personnel management. Select, train, assign work, and supervise up to three part-time employees. Independently represent university to employers and professional associations. Manage own schedule and make decisions to benefit employer partners.
    • Income generation: Promote Career Center Partners program to potential employers with goal of maximizing recruiting dollars and generating income (30 percent increase annually). Secure financial support to enable career center programming that meets or exceeds established goals. Identify and secure funding sources for Multicultural Career Alliance.
    • Employ strategies including cold calling, professional association membership, direct mail, referrals, and cross-industry marketing to increase employer interest and participation.
    • Develop relationships with private sector, public sector, and nonprofit employers to facilitate career opportunities for university students.
    • Design and implement marketing strategies to target regional employers and sell university programs and students.
    • Collaborate with university departments including office of multicultural academic support, student life, university residents, development, and alumni association to design and deliver career-related programs and events.
    • Identify employer needs and recommend recruiting options, strategies, and sponsorship opportunities.
    • Initiate, coordinate, and implement quarterly networking events to facilitate interaction of students and alumni job seekers with corporations seeking to hire.
    • Chair Employer Development Committee and the Multicultural Career Alliance.

    Employer development strategy (20 percent)

    • Chair the career center Employer Development Committee (EDC).
    • Implement and facilitate employer development strategies developed in the Employer Development Committee.

    • Establish measurable criteria for employer development goals, maintain records, and submit monthly reports.

    Campus event planning and participation (5 percent)

    Assistant Director, Employer Relations (large public university)

    Summary

    Strategically cultivates and strengthens corporate relations with and between employers, students, alumni, and faculty to maximize student employment in accordance with the university's Quality Enhancement Plan outcomes. Provides leadership in the employment services division of career services and with the employer advisory board. Assists the director with the STAR Employer Program.

    Responsibilities

    • Strategically identify and build relationships with state, regional, national, and international employers for recruitment of university's students and alumni.
    • Work with employers to develop marketing strategies for enhancement of employer presence on campus; evaluate appropriateness of employer expectations; assist with diversity recruitment; promote adherence to office procedures and deadlines, interviewing protocols, offer/accept lead times, and ethical/professional conduct. Discuss student feedback with employers and notify director of problematic employer activities/behavior and significant trends.
    • Collaborate with designated college liaisons and faculty/staff to increase employment opportunities for students, including but not limited to underserved populations and graduate students.
    • Facilitate relationships between employers and the university community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni association, foundation, etc.
    • Work closely with the experiential education staff to develop internship and cooperative education opportunities to students.

    • Design and develop marketing material to employers, including website content, compose content and coordinate timing of communications to employers.

    • Conduct ongoing assessment of employer relation's efforts and provide feedback as to the effectiveness of such efforts. Oversee the management of the recruitment-tracking database.

    Assistant Director, Employer Relations (large private university)

    Summary

    Assumes responsibility for employer relations, recruiting, and all activities related to employment events and programs.

    Responsibilities

    • Develops and maintains employer relationships to expand the range of employer recruiting activities. Actively pursues college relations/recruiter contacts as well as other hiring sources for students and alumni. Networks with chambers of commerce, employers, and professional associations for recruiting purposes.
    • Maintains resume book processes, resume referral, and other methods of presenting students and alumni to employers.

    Assistant Director, Employer Relations (medium private school)

    Description/Goals

    Directs the external relations and recruiting programs with employers seeking to hire talent. Negotiates nature of the employer/college relationship and appropriateness of services/referrals. Strategically cultivates and strengthens communication with and between employers, students, alumni, faculty, development, foundations, and corporate relations. Maximizes student employment outcomes and college resources, expands new employment opportunities and fundraising/revenue potential. Cultivates long-term relationships with employers. Strategically constructs and manages high volume year-round recruiting activities of the office of career services. Serves as consultant and liaison for and between employers and students. Initiates and enforces recruiting policies which reflect college stand on issues such as alcohol consumption, priority of academics, etc. Acts as the chief corporate fundraiser and revenue generator for the department. Schedules and assures effective implementation of employer recruiting activities for entry-level and leave-term employment, including information sessions, interviews, and other marketing strategies directed to students. Demonstrates an ability to work with a diverse student population, and serves as an advocate for that diversity.

    Responsibilities

Policies include: acceptable methods of employer outreach/marketing and diversity recruiting efforts, adherence to office procedures and deadlines, use of alcohol, interviewing protocols, offer/accept lead times and incentives, testing practices, ethical and professional conduct. Reviews and enforces policies with employer representatives, negotiating satisfactory solutions. Discusses student feedback with employers.     • In support of the divisional communication and outreach plan, takes office lead on corporate friend and fundraising initiatives. Actively pursues entry-level and internship development and fundraising opportunities. Contributes to other office publications including career services newsletter.
    • Represents college and career services in a variety of events, including Wall Street Recruiter Forums, recruiting visits to employer sites, and hosting organizations on campus for employer development and cultivation purposes. With the associate director, plans and presents recruiting-related programs for students.

    Qualifications

    Education
    Bachelor's degree with computer training.

    Experience
    Four to five years of relevant program management, strategic planning, public relations, and supervisory experience; or the equivalent.

    Special Requirements

    Career Counselor/Employer Recruitment Coordinator (medium public university)

    Description/Goals

    The department of career services is a community leader in assisting individuals to identify and implement career choices. Using strong partnerships with local, statewide, and national community members, we provide career counseling, job-search advising, and graduate/professional school assistance for students and alumni. Our teacher placement program serves as the statewide education clearinghouse.

    Responsibilities

    • Supervise one full-time staff member and several student employees.
    • Facilitate individual and group career counseling sessions in the areas of academic/career planning, job-search, and graduate school selection.
    • Conduct Internet research, develop knowledge of employment trends, and keep abreast of student needs in diverse academic areas.
    • Obtain professional qualification to administer both the MBTI and the STRONG Interest Inventory.
    • Coordinate university-wide job fairs.
    • Manage on-campus employer recruitment program.
    • Develop recruiting tools (job announcements, e-mail, website postings) and target applicants.
    • Develop and maintain student/employer databases and research outcomes/statistics.
    • Assist with generation of employer advertising revenue to defray publication costs.

    Qualifications

    Education
    Bachelor's degree in education, human services, business, or liberal arts is required. Master's degree in related area is also required or the equivalent in relevant career counseling and job-search advising experience.

    Experience

    • Demonstrated experience working in a higher education student services setting is strongly desirable.
    • An established network of local and statewide community contacts is very helpful, as is experience advocating on behalf of the university and our students.
    • Existing relationships with faculty, staff, and student groups is a major benefit.
    • Experience using university-wide services, specifically career services is ideal.
    • Knowledge of employment law, ADA, EEO, and human resource management is desirable.
    • Knowledge of employment trends in diverse fields is also desirable.

    Special Requirements
    Proven track record of strong ability to develop partnerships within a higher education setting and throughout the community is essential.
    Experience with event planning/coordination is also required. Additional skills include: public speaking experience, demonstrated outstanding verbal and written communication, organizational ability, strong follow-through, initiative, training/supervisory experience, empathy, and respect for confidentiality.
    The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong background in collaborating as a team player and in maintaining tact, professionalism, and a sense of humor in stressful situations.
    A strong history of providing exceptional customer service and displaying a positive attitude with staff, faculty, and students is a must. Strong computer skills, including MS Office programs, Internet, web site development, and email is required. Spreadsheet and database experience are specific skill requirements, with preference given to applicants familiar with Excel and Access.

    Coordinator of Employer Services (large public university)

    Responsiblities

    • Plans, organizes, promotes, and evaluates employer visits and interview schedules. Systematically collects student performance and job-offer data. Reports internship/co-op and post-graduate results to national salary survey (NACE) and academic deans and chairs.
    • Develops and maintains relationships and regular communications with employers (local, state, and nation-wide) to ensure repeat recruiting visits designed to provide internship, co-op, and professional opportunities for our students and alumni.
    • Represents the university at recruitment events held on and off campus to educate employers on the university's academic programs. Provides university program and salary offer information to employers.
    • Collaborates with multiple university college/faculty representatives and RSO's to ensure employer visits meet employer, faculty, and student needs.
    • Selects, trains, and supervises graduate assistants and student employees who schedule, promote, and staff career event and interview services. Schedules training sessions, evaluates job performance, and resolves operational and personnel issues.
    • Assists the associate director with current and potential corporate donors to ensure financial support.

    Employer Relations Associate (medium, private college)

    The staff of the career center is a high functioning, self-managed team committed to the balance between personal responsibility and teamwork. With the absence of a traditional director, team members are responsible for holding themselves and the team accountable for supporting the goals and mission of the office. The self-managed team consists of three other full-time career services associates, a part-time career services associate, and a staff assistant.

    Key Constituents

    Alumni relations; Experience, Inc./recruiting vendors; established company contacts; department chairs; relevant industry associations; school deans; program chairs; student organizations.

    Responsibilities

    • (60 percent) Establish and cultivate relationships with targeted employers and organizations through site visits, lunches, association meetings, conferences, etc. Develop ongoing marketing strategies and materials to bring greater visibility of the college to relevant employers and industries. The purposes of these relationships are to:
      • Create greater visibility of the college and its students within relevant professional communities.
      • Grow the number of full-time, freelance, and other non-internship opportunities advertised to the college's students.
      • Grow the number of on-campus interviews and information sessions conducted at the college.
    • (15 percent) Update, distribute, collect, and analyze the graduate survey data for both undergraduate and graduate students; write two comprehensive and interpretive reports annually to distribute survey findings and industry analysis.
    • (15 percent) Oversee the online recruiting system; serve as point person to for communication and outreach to vendors and users.
    • (10 percent) Present job-search strategies workshops to students participating in on-campus recruiting activities.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of two years of experience in recruiting, human resources, career services, or other related fields; demonstrated experience in employer relations.

    Description/Goals

    • Proactively develop and implement strategies designed to increase employment opportunities for university students and graduates.

    Employment Relations Manager (large public university)

    Summary

    The employment relations manager is responsible for building relationships and creating awareness among corporate and community organizations with regard to the benefits of hiring university students and graduates and of the services of career center. The goals of the position are to increase job posting, recruitment, and hiring activity for the university's students and graduates and to generate increased monetary and non-monetary support for the career center and the university.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    • Proactively develop and implement strategies designed to increase employment opportunities for our students and graduates.
    • Identify and cultivate relationships with organizations and business sectors that historically have had little or no interaction with the career center and/or experience with hiring our students and graduates. Seek to connect these entities with the appropriate resources and personnel at the career center and/or the university.
    • Advise and counsel employers with regard to the most effective means of identifying potential job candidates to meet the employer's specific needs, including, but not limited to campus recruitment, job postings, internships, career fairs, class/organization presentations, and resume searches.
    • Seek to generate monetary support, sponsorships, and gifts-in-kind from the private sector to support the goals and objectives of the career center and the university.
    • Track job market demand, use of career services, and hiring results for students in various academic majors; formulate strategies for achieving greater participation rates for those majors that underuse available career resources.
    • Monitor the quality of customer service for the career center, including the collection and analysis of survey data and assessment of and follow-up with informal feedback. Make recommendations as to how the career center can maintain and improve quality customer service.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of local and national employment market trends and their actual and potential impact on the hiring of college students and graduates.
    • Coordinate outreach activities, when appropriate, with other university departments and personnel, including, but not limited to, the Office of Development, alumni groups, and college-based career services offices.

    Employer Relations Specialist (small public college)

    Summary

    The part-time employer relations specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining effective relationships with local, regional, and national employers to increase recruitment of college's students and recent graduates. The employer relations specialist will determine hiring needs of employers and promote the college's majors to employers via cold calls, mass mailings, and off-site employer visits. This position will assist with on-campus recruitment events and will oversee the posting of employment opportunities.

    Responsibilities

    • Establish new employer contacts and strengthen current employer contacts through outreach activities such as cold calls, mass mailings, and individual employer visits.
    • Schedule and conduct employer visits to determine hiring needs and promote the college's students and alumni as a potential candidate pool.
