    Description/Goals

    Direct and manage the university career services as it assists all student, alumni, faculty, and employer clients in the development of career education, career identification and search, and pursuit of employment opportunities commensurate with formal academic pursuits. Continually expand the client/user base and scope of services to ensure provision of the widest array of services possible to the broadest mix of academic and corporate clients.

    Responsibilities

    • Serves as the primary liaison between the university, its students and alumni, and potential employers on a state, regional, national, and international scale.
    • Responsible for fiscal planning and management for career services, including all operations and staffing matters.
    • Serves as adviser and interfaces with representatives of industrial, governmental, and educational employers to assist in the most effective use of career services' efforts. Also supports the marketing of other university college and departmental efforts.
    • Develops new contacts with external organizations for the purpose of expanding employment opportunities for students and alumni.
    • Reviews and supervises the on-campus recruitment and interviewing processes as well as resume referral and job-listing services for current students as well as alumni. Coordinates and supervises staff professional development activities and training, to include travel for professional development workshops, seminars, and conferences.
    • Closely coordinates communication with deans, department chairs, and other faculty to ensure that the career services department is meeting the needs and desires of the academic colleges and departments, within the limitations imposed by the size of the staff and financial support provided by the university.
    • Constantly monitors, analyzes, and evaluates current scope of services offered through career services and plans, implements, and directs new programs under the supervision of the dean of student development and services and in coordination with other directors of student services and student activities efforts. Serves in a leadership role in various professional organizations including, but not limited to, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and those regional affiliates which provide broad opportunities for job development activities.
    • Provides career advising expertise to students and alumni regarding the job-search process, interviewing, resume, and letter writing, and all other facets of career planning. Conducts workshops, seminars, and other presentations to student, faculty, employer, and alumni groups.

    Qualifications

    Education
    Master's degree in a discipline directly related to staffing, employment, career development and planning, or other human resources concern. Academic preparation in a student counseling discipline will be considered if supported by directly-related employer college relations, recruitment, or staffing experience

    Experience
    A minimum of 10 years of combined university career services and/or corporate recruitment management experience is preferred.

    Special Requirements

    • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the goals and responsibilities of the centralized career services concept.
    • Nationwide professional contacts in both the university and employment sectors.
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills.

    Director, Career Services (large public college)

    Description/Goals

    Manages the operational, budget, and personnel functions of the career services office. Provides employment and internship programs services for the College of Business and Economics, and the School of Graduate Studies. Serves as a division of student affairs officer with the responsibility to operate a unit that enhances student learning.

    Responsibilities

    • Manages the career services operation to ensure efficient, timely, and effective programs and services to its users.
    • Develops short and long range operating plans, including budgets, programs and services, personnel, technology/other equipment, and space.
    • Provides guidance and leadership to staff, including training (as needed), staff evaluation (includes merit consideration), professional development, and related personnel matters.
    • Provide employment programs and services for the College of Business & Economics, and School of Graduate Studies.
    • Plans, coordinates, and conducts all university events that prepare students for employment and provide employment opportunities.
    • Develops strong, ongoing relationships with area employers that hire recent college graduates. Promote career services' employment-related services to this constituency.
    • Participate in professional development activities to ensure professional growth and knowledge needed to provide effective leadership and program development.
    • Serve as a member of the student affairs staff.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Master's degree in business, educational administration, counseling, college student personnel, or related field required. A minimum of five (5) years of experience in career planning and employment work, preferable in a centralized operation. Experience in program development, supervision and evaluation, budgeting, and computerization necessary. The individual must be able to interact effectively with people, possess excellent communication skills and leadership ability, and be dedicated to the National Association of Colleges and Employer's principles and practices of career planning, employment, and recruitment.

    Director, Career Services (medium public college)

    Description/Goals

    The director of career services provides leadership and direction for a comprehensive career planning facility with a mission to support the college's students in making informed decisions regarding undergraduate and post graduate plans by providing resources and opportunities to encourage career exploration and self-assessment.

    Responsibilities

    Administrative/Financial

    • In collaboration with staff, determines annual and ongoing priorities for office, working diligently to bring these priorities to fruition. Forms and actively participates in committees charged with moving office forward on many fronts (e.g. marketing, diversity, fundraising, etc.). Leads office in strategic planning retreats. Encourages and plans professional development activities. Establishes and implements departmental policies.
    • Prepares the annual operating budget and monitors monthly activity in all career services' accounts. Stewards several endowment and gift accounts and regularly updates benefactors. Chairs committee and helps select grant recipients. Creates and monitors multiple reserve funds. Oversees development and expansion of career discovery program.
    • Writes and presents grant proposals to obtain funds to support ongoing programs and for the development of new projects. Works in tandem with in-house fundraising committee to develop and implement office action plan.
    • Supervises associate director, four assistant directors, and office manager directly. Provides extensive guidance to outreach/marketing coordinator, programming assistant, and career resource center coordinator.
    • Identifies student needs for information and advising on career planning, employment, graduate schools, and scholarships. In collaboration with staff, creates programs, services, and publications to meet those needs.
    • Works in tandem with in-house diversity committee to develop and implement office diversity action plan.

    Counseling/Programming
    Counsels students on an individual and group basis regarding career planning and employment issues. Interpret vocational instruments. Develops and delivers workshops and career-related programs.

    Representing

    • Represents college in various professional organizations and addresses a wide range of constituencies as chief spokesperson for college's undergraduate career planning.
    • Addresses alumni groups, parents, faculty, student organizations, and other administrators on career-related issues. Makes concerted effort to develop new partnerships with parents and faculty.
    • On behalf of dean of college, serves on college-wide committees and represents dean on task forces to investigate new endeavors. Frequently called upon to evaluate candidates for positions in division and to serve on search committees elsewhere within the institution.

    Qualifications

    Education
    Master's degree in counseling or education.

    Experience
    Five or more years of experience in career development and/or employment counseling or the equivalent.

    Description/Goals

    Under the general supervision of the vice president for student affairs, directs the operation, policy-making, and development of career services for students and alumni. Career services focuses on providing counseling and assistance concerning career and vocational decisions. Administers cooperative education program.

    Responsibilities

    Career services

    • Provides individual and group career counseling.
    • Administers and interprets vocational interest inventories.
    • Teaches one section of Career Development 101each fall and spring semester.
    • Provides career-related seminars for interested students.
    • Maintains an up-to-date career resources library.
    • Maintains resumes for participating students and alumni and placement credentials for those in the field of education.

    Qualifications

    Education
    Master's degree in student personnel services, counseling and guidance, or a discipline whose preparation is suitable for this position.

    Experience
    At least three years of professional experience in university/college setting or in business in a human resources or training and development function is required. Full-time experience on a college/university student services staff is preferred. Important knowledge and capabilities necessary include career counseling techniques, knowledge of job trends and career development skills, effective public relations and networking abilities, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. An understanding of the principles of college student development and the policies and structure of a typical four-year, public university is preferred.

    Special Requirements
    This employee must be able to effectively direct existing, comprehensive career services programs, and to develop new ones on his/her own initiative. Dependability, creativity, good judgment, professionalism, and dedication to sound principles of student development are paramount among necessary characteristics for this position.



    Director, Career Services (small, private college)

    Description/Goals

    The director of career services supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the college and department of student life.

    Responsibilities

    • Supports and abides by all rules, regulations, and guidelines of the college and serves as an appropriate role model for students at all times.
    • Carries out the mission of the career services office. Provides career counseling and referrals to assist students with the career development process, including clarifying objectives and obtaining occupational information.
    • Provides career planning assistance through appointments with individuals, online assistance, and regularly scheduled workshops with groups.
    • Provides instruction to career planning in college experience classes.
    • Establishes and maintains effective and cooperative working relationships with students, alumni, faculty, employers, and the general public. Initiates contact with employers.
    • Assists students with career development and planning process, including obtaining information on companies, current opportunities for employment and hiring practices, and making the transition from school to career.
    • Plans and implements job fairs and on-campus recruiting events.
    • Distributes information on internships, summer jobs, and local part-time jobs.
