Summary
Each year, Teach For America, City Year, the Peace Corps, and other service organizations provide more than 65,000 service-year positions. A service year—a paid, full-time opportunity that brings talent to hard-to-fill positions—has an important impact on the community while making a lasting difference in the lives of those who serve. Whether students are preparing to further their education, building their resume, or applying for a job, a service year can serve as a powerful career pathway.
This webinar will serve as an introduction to the types of service year opportunities available and how to search for them, the skills development associated with a service year, and strategies for promoting a service year to students.
Following this program, you will be able to:
- Define the characteristics of a year of service and how to search for opportunities using the Service Year Exchange (serviceyear.org);
- Communicate the skills development associated with doing a service year;
- Understand how service years are an on-ramp to career readiness; and
- Develop programming in your office for the purpose of increasing student awareness of service year opportunities.
Presenters: Tom Brinkley, Elon University and Jenna Dell, Service Year Alliance
