As part of its intern compensation package, Ellucian provides its interns with two days for community service work. The internship program hosts one community service event, while interns are able to take an extra day for anything for which they have passion.

“Interns can use the second day as they wish,” explains Migdalia Carrero, Ellucian’s recruiting manager, university recruiting programs.

“In some instances, we invite them to join events that have already been scheduled with the larger employee population.”

The community service events that Ellucian hosts vary by location and can be based on input and ideas the program manager solicits from the interns. Some of this work has included providing support for food banks, animal shelters/Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, and FoodLink Abundance Share in the United States; and holding blood drives, working with animal shelters, and providing food for a children’s hospital in Mexico.

“Though it is a benefit, it is not an additional cost to the company, so we were able to get it approved,” Carrero says.

She adds that offering community service days is important for Ellucian because it helps with interns’ experience and engagement, and with branding the program.

“As a company, we care about our community and we care about our employees,” Carrero notes, adding that Ellucian has been offering its interns community service days since the launch of the internship program in 2016.

“We want our employees to be able to give back to what it is important to them. For the internship program, it is aligned with the interests of the new generations. It helps with attracting these young professionals to Ellucian and it helps with our brand. And, it helps them get connected with each other and network with other employees in the company.”
