• Summary

  This panel session, presented by the NACE Tribal Colleges & Universities Affinity Group (TCU), will share specific examples of successful engagement with Native American students in the college and employer settings. More than that, this is an opportunity to be visible for a population. A panel, including members of the TCU Affinity Group, a representative of the American Indian College Fund, and a Native American student, will discuss successful engagement with Native American students. The session will also include a question and answer session with the audience to address issues they are facing.

  Tammison Smith , Associate Director Career, St. Cloud State University

  Tammison Smith is the associate director at St. Cloud State University’s Career Center. She is Osage. Most recently, she worked for the Career Services Network at Michigan State University, where she trained graduate career counselors, contributed to a group helping secure employment for students with disabilities, and founded a Therapy Dog group. She is a certified Career Development Facilitator instructor, MBTI practitioner, and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) trainer. Besides NACE, she is a member of the National Career Development Association and the Society of Vocational Psychology. She holds a doctorate in counselor education and supervision with a specialty in organizational behavior.

  

  Luis Amaro , Senior Manager Growth Strategy US, Wiley Edge

  Luis Amara is a senior manager of business development at Wiley Edge. He has helped hundreds of students network with Fortune 500 companies accessing jobs they would not have had access to previously. His career in graduate recruitment spans 13+ years during which he has successfully launched graduate talent teams across multiple global organizations. In recent years, he has built Wiley Edge's University Partnerships global team, leveraging his experience to help universities give students the tools they need to access careers in technology. His extensive background in sales enables him to share insights with students about the skills businesses are seeking in emerging talent. Born in the United States to a Colombian mother and Dominican father, he’s a first-generation Hispanic college graduate. His passion for helping underserved communities gain equal access to opportunities has led him to volunteer his time toward supporting students and faculty at Historically Black Colleges & Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutes, and Tribal Colleges and Universities.

  

  Jack Soto , Sr. Program Manager Career Readiness & Employment, American Indian College Fund

  Jack Soto is Navajo of the Black-Streaked-Wood People and Cocopah of the Mountain Lion Clan. He received his M.S. in organizational development and B.A. in political science in the School of Public Affairs at American University. His work is focused on organizational cross-cultural competency with his career and academic development greatly influenced by a need to understand what success means for Native students. To that, he partners with institutions, organizations, and corporations to improve pathways to employment for a Native workforce. Further, he currently assists Tribal Colleges and Universities in developing a synthesized, culturally responsive approach to career advising.

  

  Angel Moniz , Student, United Tribes Technical College

  M. Angel Moniz (Butterfly Woman), Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish from the MHA Nation is a single mother, community organizer, and full-time student working toward a degree in Human & Social Services at UTTC. She is a student representative on the Student Government Association and a member of the Thunder Society. M. Angel has overcome many barriers throughout her life and worked very hard to get where she is at and is happy to give back, build bridges within her community, and empower others. Not only is she actively engaged on campus but is also very active in the Bismarck community where she's lived for many years. She has helped organize Lights for Liberty, Close the Camps, Justice For Vanessa Guillen, Vigil for Natasha, Victory Day, Raising Indigenous Voices, and, most recently, Renaming Custer Park, all of which focused on healing and community building. She is also public speaker who uses her voice to share her story, empower people, raise awareness, and, most importantly, to speak up against injustice and oppression.
