• Summary

  Join Elizabeth Wormsbecker and Renee Houston, University of Puget Sound, winner of the NACE 2019 Career Services Excellence Award in the small schools category, to explore how student and staff development is supported by engagement in a series of structured, reflective conversations over the course of a student’s employment. A program of reflective conversations between students and their supervisors can be simple and flexible enough to integrate within a variety of work environments (including suddenly remote environments caused by the current global health crisis).

  These conversations have a strong impact on students’ ability to connect academic learning to employment and build on key skills such as problem-solving and culturally aware communication. Beyond supporting student development, these conversations encourage students to recognize the importance of their contributions and increase their level of engagement and commitment.

  Following this program, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the value of student employment as an opportunity to support students’ career exploration and development via reflection.
  • Advocate for how a program of reflective conversations that can shift the narrative such that on-campus jobs are viewed as valuable, high-impact experiences that promote equity for students who may not otherwise have the same access to career-based opportunities; and
  • Explore actionable steps to offer training to supervisors on mentorship, relationship-building, and student development.

  Elizabeth Wormsbecker , Associate Director of Student Employment Programs, University of Puget Sound

  Elizabeth Wormsbecker has worked in Student Employment and Career Services for 7 years, advocating for meaningful student employment opportunities and experiences across campus. In her role as Assistant Director for Student Employment Programs, Training, and Development, she lives her passion for developing programs that create impactful student work experiences, support supervisors’ development of strong mentorship skills, and engage supervisors and students in reflective and meaningful conversation. Elizabeth co-developed Compass Puget Sound, a program of reflective conversations at the University of Puget Sound, and was recently present to accept the 2019 NACE Career Services Excellence Award for this program.

  

  Renee Houston , Associate Dean, [ARCHIVES]

  For more than 20 years Renee Houston, Ph.D., has engaged students with experiential learning pedagogy to address inequities centered on issues of gender, social class, and race to promote organizational change and allow for diverse perspectives to be heard. In the last decade, more than 100 students have participated in experiential projects related to homelessness, generating research that was presented at regional, national, and international communication conferences. In 2014, she was appointed as the first Associate Dean of Experiential Learning to institutionalize meaningful, focused experiential learning for students in both curricular and co-curricular activities.
