The clock is running. As DACA individuals and their institutions and employers wait for Congress to take action to protect DREAMers, there are some practical considerations that need immediate attention.

No travel outside of the United States: DACA students and employees should be advised NOT to travel outside of the United States. If they do, they will not be readmitted to the country. Please note that the DACA advance parole program, which was used in the past to allow travel, has been suspended.

October 5 deadline for DACA renewal: DACA individuals whose permission to stay in the country expires before March 5, 2018, must renew by October 5, 2017. The fee for renewal is $495. Some groups have set up scholarships (see below), and the state of Rhode Island recently announced its own scholarship fund for eligible DACA students in its state. Other states may follow Rhode Island’s lead.

Scholarships to fund the DACA renewal fee are available through a number of private and local organizations. Many are specific to a locality or state. Some that provide funds nationwide include:

Free or low-cost nonprofit immigration legal services providers: Each DACA case is unique, and students/employees should be advised to consult with an immigration attorney. See .
